Ever typed something into Google that you needed to know? I have and usually I want to read something written by an individual with some expertise on that subject matter.
Ever read an E-How article? Been there. Done that. I don't proclaim to have read every article, but the few that I've had the unfortunate opportunity to read are about as generic as you can get and thus, a complete waste of time. You'll also notice that most of the authors have only their name listed and not one single reputable publication they've written for.
I recently found out why. Demand Studios owns multiple websites including Livestrong.com and E-How.com, and they are looking for writers on Craigslist. Literally anyone can sign up to be a writer and earn anywhere from $5 to $15 for writing one on one of their many topics.
I have no problem with this procedure as long as the person writing the article has some expertise on what they are writing about. Here lies the problem as apparently Demand Studios isn't interested in producing any useful content just tricking people into clicking on their web pages so they can get a lot of page views.
Hence, I avoid E-How like the plague. And I find myself so annoyed when I see their pages come up in the search results.
And while I'm on my Gripe of the Day I also detest bloggers who set up blogs just to get page views as well. Having a blog or a website should exist because you have something worthwhile to share whether it's expertise, something beautiful, funny, informational or cute not something that just takes up space on the Internet.
